Welcome to Northern Lights Bassets. We are Eric and Jill Morse. We live in Inver Grove Heights MN. I have had a love for Basset Hounds since I was a teenager. I always said I would own one someday. We got our first Basset Bella in 2015. Before she turned 2 we started researching breeding and looking for a stud. At that time Basset Hounds were super hard to find around us. In the summer of 2018 Eric was looking at the Breeders website that we bought Bella from and they had a litter and there was only 1 male available. I called her up and talked to her about Beau to make sure there wasn't any relation with Bella. We got lucky there wasn't and 3 weeks later we drove to Iowa to pick up our little boy. The rest is history. We now have 5 Bassets. 3 females and 2 males. Bella and Beauregard "aka" Beau were our first breeding pair. We have since added Elvis who is one of Bella and Beau's puppies from their first litter. We also have Gracie and June.
Our Bassets are first and foremost our family. They sleep on the couch or floor where ever they are comfortable. They sleep with us at night and are loved and spoiled. Our litters are just as loved and spoiled. We raise all our litters inside the house where they are played with and well socialized. As they get older they get to run around and play with all the dogs as our mommas tolerate it. Our puppies are raised with dogs, cats and kids.
The name Basset comes from the French word bas, meaning low. And Basset Hounds certainly are low to the ground. Because their bones are heavy and they are muscular, they usually weigh 50 to 65 pounds although they typically are no more than 14 inches tall at the highest point of the shoulder. In reality, they are big dogs on short legs. Their short-legged appearance is the result of a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia. Despite his large size, the Basset believes he's a lap dog and will do his best to fit in yours.
Overall Basset Hounds are one of the most loyal family members you will find.
Bella is the first momma at Northern Lights. Bella was blessed with 3 litters of puppies before she retired at the age of 6. She is the alpha of the group and will be a good mentor for Gracie, June and all of our future mommas.
Gracie our Lemon and White Basset came to us from Wappepello, Missouri. Gracie is AKC Registered and is an American Bassett. She loves to be by her family and is a very mellow low key basset.
June our Black and White Basset came to us from Unionville, Missouri. June is AKC Registered and is an American Basset. She is the one that will sit and make you laugh all day long. She has got the energy for 5 bassets. She is our curious one and uses her nose to her advantage.
Beau came to us from Northern Iowa. Beau is a Tri-Colored Basset. He is a mix of American and European. He is our laid back gentleman. You can find Beau laying around napping pretty much any time of day. He loves to be by his humans and if he is feeling up to it you will catch him playing with the other bassets. Beau is super chill and doesn't have a care in the world.
Elvis is the son of Bella and Beau. Elvis is a Tri-Colored Basset. Also a mix of American and European although he has more of the European traits. He is a huge goofball and loves to talk. If he wants attention he will let you know by being super vocal. He loves to cuddle and isn't happy unless he is laying on your lap. Elvis has been in the Basset Hound Races at Canterbury Race Track in Shakopee MN for the last 2 years. He is very active and loves to run.
